Finding 01

Half of all callbacks come within 8 minutes of the voicemail landing.

We timed the gap between each voicemail landing and the callback it prompted. Most people who call back do it straight away: they see the voicemail, play it and tap call. 36% call within the first minute and 71% within the hour.

What to do:Have someone ready to answer the moment a campaign starts landing. If nobody can, VoiceDrop’s AI Inbound Agent picks up every callback, day or night.

Finding 02

A caller ID from the recipient's own state gets 65% more callbacks than an out-of-state number.

We compared voicemails from the same senders, split by where their caller ID came from. A number from the recipient’s own state did best, even when it was not their exact area code. A number from another state lost callbacks.

Finding 03

Voicemails sent Tuesday to Thursday get 14% more callbacks than ones sent Monday or Friday.

Each sender’s callbacks, compared with that sender’s own average. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday sit above it, and Monday and Friday below. Sunday is missing because almost nobody sends then.

Finding 04

5 pm in the recipient's time zone is the best hour to send, and 8 am the weakest.

Late afternoon wins: voicemails that land around 5 pm, as people finish work, bring the most callbacks. Early morning brings the fewest. Hover or tap any hour of any weekday to read it.

Finding 05

57% of callbacks arrive between 10 am and 3 pm, so that is when someone needs to pick up.

This is when the phone rings back, in the caller’s own time. Callbacks build from 9 am, peak around noon and fade after 4 pm.

What to do:Put people on the phones from 10 am to 3 pm in your recipients’ time zones, and route anything outside those hours to voicemail or the AI Inbound Agent so no callback goes unanswered.

Finding 06

93% of callbacks come within a day, so the next day is the right time for a follow-up.

After the first day the callbacks slow to a trickle, so waiting a week for a first voicemail to work adds very little. If someone has not called back by tomorrow, that is the time for the next touch.

From VoiceDrop's own call records: voicemails sent from August 11 to September 21, 2026, with each callback matched to the voicemail that prompted it. Each sending account is compared only with itself.

We measured this on VoiceDrop's own call records, one account at a time.

  • Voicemails sent through VoiceDrop from August 11 to September 21, 2026, by 117 sending accounts, with their callbacks through September 28.
  • Every inbound call to a VoiceDrop callback number was matched to the most recent voicemail that number had left for the caller in the previous 7 days. Calls with no such voicemail were left out.
  • Each account is compared only with itself: we count the callbacks an account would get if every hour, day or caller ID did as well as its own average, and compare that with what really came in. A stronger list cannot make a weekday or a number look better.
  • Times are in the recipient's local time, from their area code. Voicemails sent before 8 am or after 9 pm local time are left out.
  • We publish comparisons and timing. Individual results depend on the list, the offer and the message.
