The Callback Math: the three numbers that decide if a campaign paid for itself

Every ringless voicemail campaign comes down to three numbers, in this order:

  1. 1.Delivered voicemails = contacts × delivery rate. Only these are billed, and only these can produce a callback.
  2. 2.Callbacks = delivered × callback rate. The metric that matters: a campaign with a healthy delivery percentage and no callbacks is a failed campaign.
  3. 3.Cost per callback = cost of the units delivered ÷ callbacks. The one number that compares two lists, two scripts, or two providers fairly.

Cost per send is the number most providers quote, but two campaigns with identical delivery numbers can return very different numbers of callbacks. Carrier quality is the biggest reason, which is why VoiceDrop sends on premium carrier routes ranked on the callbacks they produce. The ringless voicemail guide covers the rest of what running the delivery side taught us.

Where the defaults come from

  • Delivery rate, 75% by default. Delivery depends on the list: full inboxes, dead numbers and carrier filtering stop some first attempts on any platform, and Multi-Attempt Delivery™ retries them automatically. Clean, validated mobile lists land higher; aged or unvalidated lists lower. Landlines cannot receive a drop at all, so run the list through phone validation first and count what survives.
  • Callback rate, 5% by default. We tell new customers to expect 2-8% of delivered voicemails during onboarding. The named reviews on our reviews page that quote a rate range from 4.7% to 11.7% (median 8.5%). Those are self-reported; your list and your offer decide where you land.
  • Prices. Pulled from the pricing page at build time: Budget $95/mo for 500 units, Individual $495/mo for 6,500 units, Growth $995/mo for 15,000 units, Scale $1,995/mo for 40,000 units. A static drop is 0.5 unit per delivery, an AI-personalized script 2-3 units. Only delivered voicemails are billed and unused units roll over for 90 days.

“(quote)” marks a send larger than the Scale plan's monthly units: the cost shown uses that plan's per-unit rate as an estimate and the real figure is an Enterprise quote. Message types: Static (one recording) and AI-personalized (2-3 units). For the cross-provider picture see the ringless voicemail cost guide.

FAQ

Cost and callback questions, answered

On VoiceDrop a static (pre-recorded) drop costs half a voice unit per successful delivery, which works out to about $0.095 on the Budget plan ($95/mo, 500 units) and about $0.025 on the Scale plan ($1,995/mo, 40,000 units). An AI-personalized script averages 2-3 units, so roughly five times a static drop. Across the market, static drops run about $0.01 to $0.10 per delivery; the catch is whether a provider bills per attempt or per delivery, and whether unused credits expire.

VoiceDrop sets the expectation at 2-8% of delivered voicemails during onboarding. The named customer reviews on our reviews page that quote a specific rate report 4.7%, 7.3%, 8%, 9%, 9.2% and 11.7%, a median of 8.5%. Those are self-reported, and list quality, the offer, area-code matching and sender-number health move the number more than the script does.

Delivery depends on the list more than the platform: full voicemail boxes, disconnected numbers and carrier filtering stop some first attempts everywhere, and VoiceDrop retries them automatically. A clean, validated mobile list lands far higher than an aged list, landlines cannot receive a voicemail drop at all, and VoIP numbers deliver a little lower than mobiles. That is why the calculator makes delivery rate an input instead of quoting one.

Because callbacks are what you are buying. A campaign can show a healthy delivery percentage and still fail if nobody rings back, and a drop that produces no callbacks is the most expensive drop there is. Cost per callback (the money spent on delivered voicemails divided by the callbacks they produced) is the one number that compares two lists, two scripts or two providers on the same footing.

Not on VoiceDrop: only successful deliveries consume voice units, every delivery includes a verifiable recording, and unused units roll over for 90 days. Some providers bill per attempt or add per-message fees on top of a plan, so when you compare prices, compare the effective cost per delivered voicemail, not the headline rate.

Multiply the contacts you expect to reach (list size times delivery rate) by the units per message: 0.5 for a static drop, 2 to 3 for an AI-personalized script. Then pick the smallest plan whose monthly units cover that number, or spread the send across months since units roll over for 90 days. The calculator above does this for you and flags any send larger than the biggest public plan.
